Getting a Study Abroad Scholarship

If you've always wanted to travel overseas to study in a foreign land, then you may want to look into getting a study abroad scholarship. These scholarships and financial aid programs can dramatically decrease the cost, or eliminate it altogether. Let's face it - travel isn't cheap. Whether you're traveling on business, pleasure or for your education, you're likely to pay a pretty penny for your airfare, accommodations and other expenses. That is, unless you're on a study abroad scholarship!

There are rigorous criteria that you often must meet to be considered for a study abroad scholarship. Your grade point average, or GPA is one of them. You may also need to submit an application essay, as well as letters of reference from teachers or employers. Also, there is often a small application fee that you must provide in order for your application to be processed.

A study abroad scholarship can make it possible for you to travel to places you've only dreamed about! Europe, South America, Australia – these are all viable options when it comes to studying overseas. Once you've decided that you want to apply for a study abroad scholarship, you need to figure out which one is right for you.

Different scholarships offer different award amounts. For example, the AIFS Study Abroad program offers between $1000 and $2000 scholarships for people wishing to study abroad for a semester. Although the scholarship may not cover everything, it will take care of a substantial amount of expenses.

Competition is tough when it comes to getting a study abroad scholarship. Like all scholarships, the determining factors include academic and extracurricular performance, quality of application documents like essays and reference letters, and urgency of need. When applying for one of these scholarships, start the application process as soon as you can. By being prepared and getting an early start, you're more likely to submit the best application possible before the deadline.

Getting a scholarship isn't easy, but it's well worth the hard work! Without one, many people could never travel to amazing foreign lands and expand their education with a study abroad program. If you're interested in applying, speak to your guidance counselor or do some research on your own to find the best study abroad scholarship programs to suit your needs.
